Fooducate Scans Food Items, Gives More Detailed Information

Buying healthy isn't always easy.  Even with nutritional labels required for food items in the grocery, companies continually find a way to concoct creative fibs.  You need an objective third party to really tell you the truth and Fooducate for iPhone may be just that.

Using the iPhone's camera, the app will let you scan the bar code on any food product at your local grocery and bring up its nutritional information.  It's not just the stuff you'll normally find at the label either.  Instead, it gives an aggregate score of the food's nutritional value (e.g. Apple Jacks get a D+; Twinkies score a C), along with detailed information that you'll never find in regular packaging.

Fooducate gives you a rundown of what you're going to get on each food item that goes beyond the required items on nutritional labels, such as sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, food coloring and a variety of additives, among many others.  Even better, it offers healthier alternatives, some of which can also be equally tasty (by healthier, we mean it suggests food items rated C+ or higher if you scanned a C-rated product).

While it's not the most amazing food app someone can concoct, it does make evaluating what you put in your mouth just a little bit easier -- it's not easy to find the kind of information it provides, after all.  You can also  share the information on Facebook, Twitter and email, as well as tag whether you like or don't like the specific item.

Should you try it?  Definitely.  Fooducate is free from the App Store, making it a no-risk indulgence that could just help you eat much healthier than you're currently doing now.
