Talk or Shout to Charge Mobile Phone

If you are, sick and tired of being mid way through a conversation on your handset only for the battery to die. Worry no more, as soon the sound of your voice could actually charge the phone’s battery.

According to new research findings, it will not be long before mobile phone batteries charge with the sound of the human voice. The research, which was carried out in South Korea by a group of engineers, has reportedly found a way to change sound waves (including those created by the human voice) in to electricity.

There is also an indication by Dr Sang-Woo Kim of Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, that in the future phone batteries that are equipped with this new technology will also be able to charge themselves from music or background noises even when the device is not in use. This technology could prove to be a god send for devices like the HTC Thunderbolt, which has received some bad reviews regarding battery life since its launch.

In an article by the Telegraph coming to us by way of PCWorld via ITProPortal, Dr Sang-Woo Kim together with his team is presently working on a prototype for this technology, which could possibly convert the sound of about 100 decibels into 50mv of electricity.

Dr Sang-Woo Kim said, “Sound power can be used for various novel applications including cellular phones that can be charged during conversations and sound-insulating walls near highways that generate electricity from the sound of passing vehicles.”

Although the amount of electricity is not enough to fully charge a battery, this is a great achievement and provides a great platform for further improvements. I must say when I first came across this article I had visions of Dom Joly shouting into an large handset – from the ‘Trigger Happy’ sketches. What do you think of this new technology?
