Tesco Mobile chief executive Graham Harris says affordability and large range of Android phones is responsible for platform’s dominance
Tesco Mobile says that it is selling more Android phones than Apple iPhones for the first time.
According to the operator the emergence of Android in the smartphone market has been swift – it said prior to Christmas its Apple iPhone sales were out selling Android devices by two handsets to one.
Tesco Mobile – which is a joint venture between Tesco and O2 – said the increase in Android sales can be put down to the affordable cost and wide device range available to customers.
Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile chief executive Graham Harris said increased consumer choice in the mobile market was also driving competition between manufacturers.
Harris said:“There is a lot of choice in the market and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems.
“We commend this healthy competition between operating systems as we see this as helping to drive consumer choice and flexibility.”
The announcement by Tesco Mobile is backed up by recent figures released by arket research firm Gartner which said global Android sales grew by nearly 900 per cent from 2009.
Gartner said 67.2 million Android based units were sold in 2010 accounting for 22.7 per cent of the market.
