Orange Switzerland is expecting Nokia's N9 on September 15th

Release date info for Nokia's sweet slab of Meego has been scarce, but now Orange Switzerland's webpage announces the N9 is coming its way September 15th. Last month Swedish carrier 3 Group promised it would arrive there September 23rd, while some retailer in Kazakhstan is apparently listing them for sale August 19th. We're not quite ready to whip out our passport and translator for a taste of the (not) zombie OS's brains yet, but we'll keep an eye out for any more release date information as it comes.

Cellular South Continues Commitment to True Unlimited Data

Cellular South Continues Commitment to True Unlimited Data Cellular South Continues Commitment to True Unlimited Data

Cellular South

As AT&T and Verizon implement tiered data pricing, consumers are left to manage megabytes and limit how they use their wireless devices, while worrying about high data charges.  Actually, unlimited wireless data plans are still alive and well and available at Cellular South, the nation’s largest independent wireless company and the provider with the highest smartphone penetration rate in the nation. Cellular South was the first wireless provider to introduce unlimited plans back in 2001 and continues to provide the best value in wireless today, through its commitment to continuing to provide unlimited data. The company’s dedication to unlimited data enables its customers to get the most out of their devices without any surprises on their monthly bills.

“For years we’ve been offering wireless plans and services in a way that wireless users don’t have to manage minutes or usage. Wireless users should not have to think before they download or worry about surprise, ‘gotcha’ bills that may come after,” said Kevin Hankins, chief operating officer for Cellular South. “Our customers don’t have to worry about monitoring their megabytes. Our industry-leading unlimited, nationwide plans are just one of the reasons Cellular South has achieved a smartphone penetration rate of 49 percent – eclipsing the industry average of 38 percent,” Hankins said. “It’s not difficult to see why Cellular South is the clear choice for smartphone users. We offer the best network, plans and devices for smartphone users – hands down.”

With all of the right strategies in place, Cellular South is on the cusp of some exciting enhancements, including more positive plan changes that offer customers even greater flexibility to search, stream and download without having to worry about megabytes or gigabytes.

New plans under development and coming soon will include new flavors of unlimited nationwide voice, data, text and picture messaging as well as optional additional features – all reinforcing Cellular South’s commitment to providing customers with the best value in wireless through more choices for unlimited data services.

RIM Delivers Revolutionary Social App Experience with BBM 6

BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), one of the largest mobile social networks in the world is now enabling a new and revolutionary social experience. Research In Motion (RIM) today announced the availability of BBM version 6 (BBM 6), which provides support for "BBM connected" apps, allowing users to easily interact with each other from within the BBM connected app.

BBM connected apps integrate the popular functionality of the BBM service and offer users the ability to interact with their friends from within the app itself. For example, with a BBM connected game app, users can invite their BBM friends to join them in a game and then chat with one another in real time while the game is being played – without ever leaving the game app.

Powermat accompanies MyTouch 4G Slide at retail launch, or so the manufacturer says

If you've already misplaced the charging cable for your MyTouch 4G Slide, then it's time to hustle back to your local T-Mobile retailer, where the new QWERTY handset is joined at its in-store launch by Powercube's inductive charging cover. Sure, your bank account just received $200 worth of hurt, but if you've got a $90 buffer on your credit card, what's an extra $30 for the shell and $60 for the Powermat, especially if it means keeping your phone alive? Sadly, both stores we called didn't have the cover, so you might want to give Magenta a buzz beforehand, although T-Mo's website is ready to take your money. No matter how you get it, you'll still need to keep the base station from getting buried under pizza boxes and laundry, but we know you're up to the task. Follow after the break for a slice of the PR.

Windows Phone Mango Twitter integration shown off, hashtagged (video)

Sadly, Twitter integration wasn't part of the package when we checked out Windows Phone Mango at the end of last month. The feature has finally been rolled out in the latest developer build of the forthcoming mobile operating system, and WinRumors has taken it for a spin on video. Thrill at the simple setup process through Windows Live. Gasp at integration with the People and Me hubs. Stare in stunned silence at the threaded conversations. All that and more in the video after the break.

HTC Ignite and Prime surface on Dutch e-tailer, may indeed be coming soon

Second time's a charm? Here's hoping. Just months after seeing the so-called HTC Ignite and Prime surface alongside the Pyramid (which already launched as the Sensation 4G), it seems as if the remaining duo have found a home over at The Phone House. For those unaware, that's the Dutch version of the UK's Carphone Warehouse, a top-tier mobile shop that doesn't steer folks wrong too often. The Ignite looks to be a Windows Phone 7 handset with an 800MHz processor, 3.7-inch display and an otherwise understated motif. The Prime, on the other hand, sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera and Microsoft's homespun OS. There's no mention of a price tag on either (nor any other specifications), but that whole "coming soon" thing most certainly has our interest piqued.

BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC?

BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC?

We're not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it's from RIM, and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we've seen of the 9860, aka the Torch. It's made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. Place your bets in comments below, and feel free to speculate about when this thing might actually ship -- and what color it might be when it does.

RIM releases BBM 6, makes your mobile messaging dreams come true

It's been quite awhile since RIM's mobile chat service got a facelift, but back in April we got a sneak peek of the next BBM build. Since then, millions upon millions have waited with bated breath for its release, and now they must wait no more: BBM 6 has finally been unleashed upon the world. This new bit of code brings support for BBM-connected applications -- so you can chat within apps and both view and download your friends' favorite apps from lists on their BBM profiles. The new functionality means programs for real-time project collaboration are possible, as are new types of social gameplay. Nifty features, all, but are they enough to reverse RIM's less-than-rosy recent fortunes?

Hey Vonage customers, your VoIP service of choice is about to get a bit of a mobile value-add. Announced today, the company's new Extensions service links your existing home internet calling plan to extra phone numbers -- like a cellphone-- for free, so you can make that long-distance call to Tante Lulu in Gstaad on-the-go. Okay, so the feature isn't exactly gratis -- you're still required to sign up for an unlimited international calling plan, but the bucks literally stop there. All it takes to get started with this "virtual calling card" is an access number and some foreign digits. Sound too complicated for you? Don't fret, official iPhone and Android-compatible apps are scheduled to hit their respective markets in the coming weeks. So, go ahead and ring ol' Lu for her 89th birthday. She'll be glad you called.

The move allows customers to use Vonage's signature unlimited(1) international calling plans from their mobile phones to call friends and family abroad. HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC

True to its namesake, the Wildfire S is preparing to blaze across our native prairies without abandon. After gaining the FCC's nod of acceptance for use on our 1900 / 850MHz HSPA bands -- followed by T-Mobile's official announcement -- the fun-sized candybar has received FCC approval for igniting our CDMA networks. A leaked roadmap suggests the Gingerbread treat is destined for US Cellular in October, but don't be surprised if the little guy appears at Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and the like. Even Verizon could benefit from the Wildfire S, seeing that the Motorola Citrus is downright sour. Just promise not to name it the Droid Burn, okay?

Sprint Statement on AT&T’s Latest Attempt to Takeover of T-Mobile USA

On July 25, 2011,  AT&T submitted to the Federal Communications Commission a new economic model meant to justify its proposed takeover of T-Mobile USA. In response, Vonya B. McCann, senior vice president of Government Affairs for Sprint (NYSE: S), issued the following statement:

"AT&T's 'do-over' submission is a last-ditch attempt to distract regulators, politicians and consumers from the fact that it has failed to provide any evidence that its proposed takeover of T-Mobile yields meaningful benefits. Its latest model, clearly constructed with predetermined results in mind, does nothing to change the negative consequences of the takeover for consumers in the form of higher prices, reduced innovation and decreased investment. The facts do not justify allowing that to happen, and we believe the ongoing investigations by the Department of Justice, the Federal Communications Commission and 11 state attorneys general and various state regulatory commissions will reach the same conclusions."

LG turns it around, reports profits back in the green

After six months of knuckle-crunching losses, LG can finally wind the window down and turn the radio on to Seoul FM. The electronics giant just reported a net profit of 108 billion ($100 million) in the last quarter, primarily thanks to sales of LED and Cinema 3D TVs. Its handset subsidiary, which has been pushing into the Android high end with devices like the Optimus 2X, is still bleeding cash -- but losses were halved compared to last quarter, so perhaps the wound is finally scabbing over. Meanwhile, the LG Home Appliance Company posted "record-high" sales, but it'll have to Thinq even harder in future because profits were held back by higher material costs, currency fluctuations and greater competition. Definitely too soon for cruise control.

Unauthorized Phone Charges Costing Americans More Than $2 Billion a Year

xigo.PNG

In a hearing on July 13th, 2011, Xigo CEO Dave Spofford joined Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Vermont Assistant Attorney General Elliot Burg and Walter McCormick of the U.S. Telecom Association to testify in front of the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation about the $2 billion worth of unauthorized charges appearing on phone bills each year.

Chairman John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV is leading an investigation into cramming – a deceptive practice that adds unauthorized third-party charges to millions of companies’ and consumers’ telephone bills each month. Each year, telephone companies place approximately 300 million third-party charges on their customers’ wire-line and wireless phone bills, amounting to more than $2 billion worth of unauthorized fees. The Committee issued its findings at the conclusion of the hearing.

Have your Fill with the New AT&T LG Thrill 4G

LG Thrill 4G has been shown in the AT&T website, with no dates yet. However, there is a development in this section since the price of the 3D smartphone has been unveiled, even $99.99 with a new two-year contract. However, there have been rumors spreading around that the new AT&T handset might be out as early as August 7. Even though it has already been launched in other markets as the LG Optimus 3D, having it exclusive for AT&T customers is still a good sign.

It fills customers in with specs such as a Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a PowerVR SGX540 for its video processor, with 512 MB RAM, all coming out in Froyo, which can be updated to Gingerbread upon purchase. It also brags of its dual 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, which can capture videos at 720p and 1080p. It also has 8GB on-board storage that can be expanded to 32GB via MicroSD.

HTC Ruby images leak via Flickr, mysteriously disappear

It looks like someone forgot about the HTC Flyer's glossy screen: a series of shots (now pulled) from Flickr reveal what appears to be the backside of a new HTC smartphone. The photo sharing service outed the shots as being taken by an HTC Ruby, a white-backed smartphone with a dual-flash camera and 3.5mm audio jack. Really, that's all we know. The last phone HTC codenamed "Ruby" turned out to be the HTC Arrive, so maybe this gem will shine with a Mango-tinged hue. Then again, Android is just as likely to use cameras and headphone jacks as any other OS, so really it's anybody's game. Hit the break for a bonus reflecto-shot and tell us what you think this phantom phone ought to run.

Judge tells Oracle to rethink $2.6 billion claim against Google

Oracle Vs. Google

The war between Google and Oracle is far from over, but the big G keeps racking up tiny victories in what are admittedly modest battles. Now the Redwood Shores-based company has been told to go back to the drawing board with its damages report. Originally Oracle sought $2.6 billion, but its theories were largely dismissed and Judge William Alsup suggested an alternative starting point of roughly $100 million. The company still has an opportunity to present a new report, one that will likely seek much more than the proposed $100 million, but things are looking increasingly tough for the claimant. It wasn't all good news for Goog, though. While the judge told Oracle to narrow its focus from Android as a whole to just specific infringing features, he did agree that related advertising revenue should be included in the theoretical royalty base. He also offered harsh criticism for what he viewed as its "brazen" disregard for intellectual property rights. The trial is still scheduled for October, so we should have a better idea of how this whole thing will play out by Halloween.

How would you change the Kyocera Echo?

We get the impression that Kyocera's design team had been hacking away at the Echo for years -- largely due to the blocky corners that remained, despite the current market's affinity for curvation -- and in a way, we're actually relieved that Sprint took a chance with it. We've seen what's to come when looking at dual-screen handsets, and if executed properly, the future seems bright. The Echo itself surprised us with its flexibility, and while it's obviously a niche device, we're certain a few of you have ponied up for one. So, here's your chance to tell us all what you'd do differently the next time around. Would you change the form factor in any way? How's about that slider / locking mechanism? Was Android 2.2 the right choice? Do you wish it were available on a different carrier? Go on and get creative in comments below!

Sprint Samsung Replenish gets Tastier in Raspberry Flavor

Great news for girlies out there that likes to get a new phone from Sprint that looks and feels like carrying a fruity item. Starting July 24, Sprint now offers a new colored Samsung Replenish in “Raspberry Pink”. This may just be the same as its other predecessors, such as the “Onyx Black” and the “Arctic Blue”, but the concept of having this kind of tone is refreshing, thinking that the mobile industry is dominated by shades of black and gray.

The Samsung Replenish runs on Android 2.2, has a Qualcomm MSM 7627-2 600 MHz processor, with a memory of 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, and can be expandable to 32GB via a MicroSD Slot. It also brags on a full QWERTY keypad underneath a 2.8-inch touch screen, with a body made of 80% recyclable materials. With three colors now available to choose from, it will provide appeal and attraction to anyone who chooses the color of choice.

LG Thrill 4G up for pre-order today at Radio Shack, ahead of August 7th launch?

The LG Thrill 4G was announced at CTIA four months ago , but wasn't given its rightful time in the sun due to a much larger elephant in the room. Now the phone's launch is quickly approaching, however, and the AT&T-branded Optimus 3D is ready to get some glory. We were sent not one, but two separate emails this morning from Radio Shack insiders with a few details about the retail chain's rollout of the device. As it turns out, visitors to The Shack can be offered the opportunity to reserve a Thrill -- supposedly gearing up for an August 7th launch -- starting today with the purchase of a $50 gift card. According to the screenshots sent to us, the Thrill can be all yours for $80 with a two-year contract ($550 if you exhibit a fear of commitment). We're hesitant to declare August 7th the official launch date, since history has shown that resellers don't always get handsets at the same time as corporate outlets do. If you find any success reserving one today, however, we'll be thrilled elated to hear about it.

HTC Ruby opens Itself as a Mystery

It’s more interesting that a smartphone will be introduced into the world through a Blurrycam or a stolen shot. This is what HTC Ruby is also experiencing on its end. This mysterious smartphone has been caught off-guard, indirectly taking an image of it as reflected on the HTC Flyer tablet. With images being unofficial, coming from Flickr specifically, this may bring about excited HTC lovers out there. One of the mysteries here is that no one knows if this will be a Windows Mobile runner or an Android handler.

Although this may be one of the less effective shots ever taken, having no front face or direct pictures, it is more than enough to prove the existence of a new HTC smartphone. So far, only the back part is unveiled, showing a two-tone body, most likely in white and pink. It also shows a dual-LED flash on the camera part, with a standard 3.5mm headset jack.

Netflix to Support Motorola Droid Bionic at Launch

Even though the Motorola Droid Bionic has not yet been released for open market, there have been movements detected in the app community of services and products that would take part in making the Droid phone more than just a device for calling and texting. Netflix is one of those, including the Droid Bionic to be one of the phones that would have the service, providing the best experience of viewing movies on the device.

Just imagine the quality of the movie that can be viewed on a phone that has a 4.3-inch qHD display, being backed up by a dual-core processor, a 1GB RAM, and hopefully, and Android Gingerbread OS that would really haste things up. There will be no lagging, no dead pixels, and no image inconsistencies on the phone. Good thing that some observant have been watching, or they may have missed this news in the first place.

Peek calls own internet-only devices 'collector's items,' heads to India with the cloud

Nokia? Samsung? LG? Those jokers are all 'old world' has-beens. The future -- according to Peek's latest email campaign -- is Indian featurephones. Well, at least MicroMax's latest, the Q80 EZPAD. Peek says its 'Genius Cloud' gifts the Q80 with smartphone-like features via cloud-based software. The firm's site claims that the service will run on any hardware, from not-phone to smartphone, providing push mail, instant messaging, video chat, social networking, software GPS, web browsing, and other smartphone features. Writing on Business Insider, Peekster-in-Cheif Amol Sarva asserts that low-end devices have pushed Nokia out of the asian market, and suggests that with the help of the Genius Cloud, featurephones can do the same to RIM. If that doesn't work out, at least the firm still has a corner on the dedicated tweeting handheld market.

Featuring flexible pricing for unlimited data and available with affordable monthly payments on any of T-Mobile's phones and mobile broadband devices, including the latest 4G smartphones and tablets, the new Value plans could save customers hundreds of dollars annually.

Slated to be available beginning on July 24, the new plans build on T-Mobile's commitment of offering affordable, consumer-friendly plans in tune with the evolving needs of wireless customers. Available with a two-year agreement for new and existing customers, the Value plans offer single-line and multiline options with a range of price points for talk, unlimited text and unlimited data with 2 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB of high-speed data - with no data overage charges. Customers can choose from a variety of monthly plans and only pay for the high-speed data they need.

"T-Mobile is committed to making the always-on benefits of smartphones and tablets more accessible and worry-free for all Americans," said John Clelland, senior vice president, marketing, T-Mobile USA. "Customers want to enjoy all that the mobile Web has to offer, but they don't want to pay for more than they need or worry about bill shock. It actually looks like the latest US phone release, however, it comes with a different name known as the Motorola XT860 4G. This is the model moniker found in Bell’s new offer to the people located up north. While everything else may look like the same with the phone from Verizon, there are also unique features that can be enjoyed.

The Motorola XT860 4G also has support for radio being played on the HSPA+ network, which can receive signals on the 850MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100MHz bands. This only means that the quality of streaming data into the phones will not be affected via a network signal, which can be great for roaming services without the disturbance. It has all the same goodies such as a speedy 1GHz Dual core processor, on Gingerbread.

Motorola XT860 4G is the Droid 3's curling loving cousin for Bell

Motorola XT860

Looks like someone took the Droid 3, slapped a new name on it, and shipped it north to our friends in Canada, but added one neat twist -- it's now rocking an extra "G." Officially known as the XT860 4G, Bell's version of Motorola's QWERTY slider comes packed with a HSPA+ radio that can handle the 850MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100MHz bands. That means not only can our ice-sweeping neighbors enjoy blazing fast mobile data, but they can roam the globe without sacrificing their deliciously speedy connection. Otherwise, you're looking at the same 4-inch, dual-core Gingerbread device that just launched here in the states. For the moment though, price and availability are still up in the syrup-scented air.

Motorola Mobility Canada Introduces Motorola XT860 4G: World's Thinnest QWERTY Slider Smartphone

Thin, fast, strong - Motorola XT860 4G offers unprecedented mobile power to Canadians

TORONTO, July 14, 2011 /CNW/ - Setting a new standard for superphones, Motorola Mobility Canada Ltd. introduces the Android™-powered Motorola XT860 4G, available soon exclusively at Bell Mobility. The mobile powerhouse delivers uncompromising web, email and media content to Canadians and will be Bell's first superphone equipped with a full slide-out keyboard. The individuals using this device will become digital trailblazers, channeling the strengths of the device to power through their day.

Among the many strengths of Motorola XT860 4G is the device's dual-core 1GHz processor, enabling users to simultaneously run apps, stream media, talk, email and surf the web, all without delay. A permanent number row on the top of the thin QWERTY keypad lets users type and text faster and more accurately without the need to always hit the 'ALT' button. And with a brilliant 4.0-inch qHD touchscreen display, Motorola XT860 showcases clearer photos, Web pages and video content.

"The Motorola XT860 4G is the superphone for the superhuman task of balancing our personal and business lives," said David Petrou, sales director, Motorola Mobility Canada. "With a dual core processor, ultra-efficient 5th row QWERTY and powerful multimedia features, you're up to the challenge."

"Bell has established itself as Canada's superphone destination and we're excited to add the Motorola XT860 4G - our first superphone with a full keyboard - to our already impressive portfolio of these powerful devices," said Tony Grewal, Director of Products at Bell Mobility. "On Canada's best network, the XT860 will offer a range of benefits for both business and consumer customers."

Marvel at Mind-Blowing Media Content
Motorola XT860 4G offers loads of features for extraordinary entertainment and functionality. Users have the benefit of Adobe Flash 10, allowing them to stream web content, videos and games on the most popular video player available today. The XT860 4G features a front-facing camera to video chat with friends, family and coworkers whether with Wi-Fi or a HSPA+ connection. All of this is delivered on a generous and brilliant 4.0-inch qHD display. Connect Motorola XT860 4G to other media devices - such as computers and televisions - with plug and play technology, via DLNA or HDMI, to enjoy multimedia on multiple screens with mirror mode.

Motorola XT860 4G comes with Connected Music Player, a personal music dashboard powered by TuneWiki, allowing users to stream music from the Web, including podcasts, Web radio or other web-based streaming content. Also, while songs are playing, lyrics are streamed so users can sing along without missing a beat.

Discover and Connect While On-the-Go
With Motorola XT860 4G, individuals can stay informed of up-to-the-minute events, bargains, restaurants and other opportunities that are in their vicinity and match their preferences. Using Motorola's Social Location technology, local information is compiled from thousands of the Internet's most powerful websites, and then filtered based on context and past behavior before it is pushed out to the device enabling people to explore new shops and restaurants, find friends who are in the same area, and call for reservations or tickets with the click of a single button. Information filters are updated based on response, and relevant data is only sent to the user when he or she is looking for it, without being intrusive.

Motorola XT860 4G leverages smart docking technology, offering tailored experiences based on home, office, bedroom or car dock settings. As users transition environments throughout the day, Motorola XT860 4G adapts its features automatically based on the dock it's connected to and pre-defined settings. For example, when a user connects his or her Motorola XT860 4G into a dock in the bedroom, the device automatically adjusts to pre-defined settings, such as a lower screen brightness, alarm clock and homescreen news updates. When moved from the bedroom dock to the car dock, Motorola XT860 4G can automatically display GPS navigation and stream a pre-selected morning radio program, giving users the experience they desire as they transition throughout the day.

Built for Fun but Ready for Business
Motorola XT860 4G empowers users to manage business instantly, intuitively and securely. Never be out of the know with work issues by keeping up with corporate email sent directly to the device. Users can keep track of their schedule through a full calendar and they have the ability to see if colleagues are busy and initiate new meetings. Users can download, review and edit documents, presentations or spreadsheets with a pre-loaded Quick Office. Also, with the built in Citrix Receiver application, business users benefit from simple, secure access to business applications, desktops, and IT services. The large 4.0-inch qHD display makes it easy to see the document with little scrolling or panning. Additionally, the five-row QWERTY keypad makes it easy to quickly type up responses to emails, and there's no need to wonder if the IT department will approve Motorola XT8604G, as the device is fully business ready with security, password protection and encryption requirements.
