After more than a month-long delay, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is finally headed to the Xperia X10, according to a blog post from Sony Ericsson. Originally, SE had scheduled the update to roll out towards the end of the second quarter, or early in the third quarter, but obviously things didn’t go as planned. Today, however, Sony Ericsson’s blog said that “development and testing is still ongoing and the current plan is [to] start the roll-out in the beginning of August.”
This should put a smile on the faces of most X10 owners who can now get caught up to the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc, which are set to ship with Gingerbread in tow. New features coming in the update include a Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a few new widgets, SD card support for app installation, a customizable app tray on the home screen, and Flash 10.3 support.
The X10 will be the only Xperia handset (excepting the Play and Arc) to receive further updates, as the X10 mini, mini pro, and X8 all lack the memory to handle Gingerbread. Unfortunately, not all X10 owners will be lucky enough to get the 2.3 update. “Even if there will be some operator kits getting this upgrade, as said before – some of you will not be able to upgrade your customized version of Xperia X10,” said Sony Ericsson.
